Today in Tashkent, a two-day seminar dedicated to the practice of reporting on court proceedings in the media began for journalism students.

The event is organised by the Public Foundation for Support and Development of National Mass Media, along with partners from the "Strengthening the Judicial System in Uzbekistan" project—the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the local branch of the NGO East-West Management Institute (USA).

The urgency of this topic is driven by the significant increase in recent years in Uzbekistan's need for journalists who can professionally cover judicial activities.

Throughout the seminar, participants will analyse and discuss the ethical and legal aspects of reporting on court proceedings from both social and legal perspectives. The importance of balancing the right to information with the right to privacy will be a key focus.

During the training, participants will learn methods of collecting information and preparing materials on high-profile public cases (including field reporting), best practices for preparing questions for interviews with lawyers and court participants, analysing documents and court decisions, and how to search for and correctly use open data when covering court cases. Special attention will be given to fact-checking: verifying information, its sources, and methods of data verification.
